Yes! Finally, it looks as though spring may be upon us. Or, pre-spring at least. This is a great time to start your spring cleaning checklist. At the top should be cleaning your windows and patio sliding doors or french doors. Here are some tips on getting your windows ready for spring.
First, Clean Your Windows
It’s hard to believe how much dirt and debris accumulates on the glass during the winter. It is not at all weird for them to be pretty gross by the spring. Usually, it’s most noticeable when the sun hits them. Most of the dirt comes off with water. What doesn’t, will usually come off with a soft brush and a little dish detergent and water. Using a pressure washer or a similar device for cleaning your windows can cause damage. Also, one other tip, using a microfiber cloth for wiping your windows dry is the best. Don’t use anything that can scratch the glass or leave lint.
Now, the Window Seals
This is not a type of sea critter. This seal is very important to stopping air and water leaks in your windows and doors. This seal typically involves weather stripping and caulking. Weatherstripping is a strip of rubber or metal that seals a gap in your window that air or water can get through when it is closed. Caulking is a liquid seal between the window frame and molding. These seals all wear out over time. Weather stripping and caulking can be replaced. You may find a DIY on re-doing the weather stripping and caulking yourself, but if you want to save time and enjoy your spring leave it to the professionals. Call a local glass company. They typically repair windows instead of a window company that will want to replace them.
Next, Check the Hardware
The best way to check the hardware on all your windows is to make sure you are able to open and close them all without exerting much effort. If a hinge or a crank will not move, don’t force it. You could try lubricant. If that does not work, then call your local glass and window specialist
